What is an OB 1st and 2nd Trimester Ultrasound?
An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It is also known as sonography.
Obstetric Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of a baby (embryo or fetus) within a pregnant woman, as well as the mother’s uterus and ovaries. It does not use ionizing radiation, has no known harmful effects, and is the preferred method for monitoring pregnant women and their unborn babies.
A 1st trimester pregnancy ultrasound is a routine part of prenatal care at 6 to 9 weeks, allowing parents a welcome first glance of their tiny baby bean. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that all moms get a first trimester ultrasound. It’s used to: confirm the fetal estimated due date, confirm the fetal heartbeat, to rule out a tubular or ectopic pregrancy, and determine the number of fetuses,
A 2nd trimester pregnancy ultrasound is done between 18 to 20 weeks to examine the baby’s anatomy and confirm that the baby is developing normally. Woman with high-risk pregnancies may have multiple ultrasounds in their second trimester. A 2nd trimester ultrasound will also be able to check fetal anatomy, the placenta, and the amniotic fluid.
Preparing For Your Obstetric Ultrasound
- You may wear your own clothing, such as jogging, leggings, or sweat pants, as long as there are no metal fasteners, zippers, buttons, etc. Hospital gowns are available.
- Jewelry and other accessories should be left at home, if possible, or removed prior to the scan.
Walk-in Patients: Please be sure to bring the signed order from your physician requesting the examination and your insurance card.
How Soon Will Scan Results Be Available?
Your images are reviewed, and results interpreted by one of our qualified doctors who specializes in reading images (radiologist). The Radiologist will prepare a report, which is electronically sent to your doctor as soon as available, usually within 24-48 hours.
