Renal/Renal Doppler

Ultrasound

What is a Renal/Renal Doppler Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It is also known as sonography.

A renal ultrasound is a safe and painless scan of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs located toward the back of the abdominal cavity, just above the waist. They remove waste products from the blood and produce urine.

A renal ultrasound image shows the internal structure of the kidneys and related organs. A renal doppler ultrasound is used to view blood flow in the renal arteries.

A renal ultrasound may be used to assess the size, location, and shape of the kidneys and related structures, such as the ureters and bladder. A renal ultrasound can detect cysts, tumors, abscesses, obstructions, fluid collection, and infection within or around the kidneys.

A renal doppler ultrasound is used to look for blockages or narrowing of the renal arteries which may contribute to hypertension or renal dysfunction. Monitor existing renal artery disease, or follow-up after surgical intervention. The renal doppler test allows doctors to assess plaque buildup and identify narrowing of the arteries.

Preparing For Your Abdominal Ultrasound

  • No food or drink (8) eight hours before your scan.
  • 30 ounces of water 1 hour prior to scan.
  • You may wear your own clothing, such as jogging, leggings, or sweat pants, as long as there are no metal fasteners, zippers, buttons, etc. Hospital gowns are available.
  • Jewelry and other accessories should be left at home, if possible, or removed prior to the scan.

Walk-in Patients: Please be sure to bring the signed order from your physician requesting the examination and your insurance card.

How Soon Will Scan Results Be Available?

Your images are reviewed, and results interpreted by one of our qualified doctors who specializes in reading images (radiologist). The Radiologist will prepare a report, which is electronically sent to your doctor as soon as available, usually within 24-48 hours.
